Peek in on the Kitchen Updates

I am sorry to admit that the major changes in our kitchen happened months ago.  However, I am also stoked to finally show you a little bit of it that is cleaned and sort-of finished.

First of all, we bit the bullet and painted over the garish (but once loved) lime green.  We chose Moonshine by Benjamin Moore, as inspired by multiple spaces on Young House Love.

It was cute, but not really functional for us since I never sat down at a desk when I could keep my laptop with me on the couch.  We found that it really made the corner feel smaller than it was too. So, then, after initially painting the kitchen, we tried this:

The issues with this arrangement were many, the most annoying being that , yet again, it was not functional at all.  The small white table and chairs fulfilled an excellent role as romantic Saturday breakfast area for two in the adorable nook in our old apartment, but it certainly would not function as any semblance of a dinner table.  I thought this setup was cute, but not great.  In addition, the rug looks nice here, but it was way too disproportionate for the space and the tiny table.

Enter my Granni’s dining suite that I mentioned in an earlier post.  (Derek’s dad kindly helped us pack it up and move it in his truck over a weekend.)  As I previously mentioned, the table is much more functional–I’ll say perfect for the space–but the other pieces are far too large for this small space. That’s where the creativity comes in.

I chose to keep the buffet in the front room office.

The hutch is currently hosting the dishes I also inherited in the long end of the living room.

???????????????????????????????Lucky for me, I really do prefer non-matchy-matchy.  So this way, I get to enjoy the whole set without compromising my current set of design principles. On the other hand, I now have a lot more wood on my first floor than I am used to, and I become increasingly tempted to paint or re-stain or whitewash everyday.  But, as with most inherited things, I feel obliged to give the pieces a fair chance in their current state before I defile them.

Anyway, back to the kitchen.  We removed the old blinds on the porch door and window.

They were energy efficient and all that jazz, but not my style at all.  I really do despise blinds. I replaced them with sheer, lightly patterned curtains on an ORB rod with clips.  And just to add to the insulation factor and the light reducing factor, I lined them on the back side with brown sheers that I had lying around.

To bring in another layer of pattern, I bought a Martha Stewart stencil set at Michael’s and added a little whimsy to the far wall between the bedroom and the bathroom.  It ties in with the pattern on the blue rug (in the above picture with the white table), which now sits between the two walls of cabinets in the kitchen proper.

And speaking of rugs, I had an amazing raid at the dollar tree, which hooked me up with my new rug.  They had discarded FLOR carpet squares for $1 each.  I snatched up pretty much everything they had, including 9 yellow, faintly striped squares.  They sit PERFECTLY under the table when it is in its non-party state. They have held up well, stay put, and need no adhesive or connectors between individual squares.

Also, notice the unobtrusive addition of the Target cubed bookcase in the background.  It is great for cookbooks and doo-dads, and someday great kitchen floor kids toys. Can’t wait to show you the other side of the room!

2 hour free dining room makeover!

So, I’ve been basically absent from the blogoshpere for the entire last week.  Firstly, our internet has been down, so that makes it impossible to post anything.  Secondly, my friend Jessica got married yesterday, and as the maid of honor, my last few days have  been completely dominated by wedding preparations.

Just to give you an idea of the week I’ve had, check out these amazing shots of the wedding crew!

The bride’s dress was a DIY dream.  It was her mom’s dress, but her aunt was able to modernize it by removing the lace sleeves and changing the shape a bit.  So gorgeous!

Today I finally had a day to myself.  After sleeping 14 hours yesterday to catch up on lost energy, I finally had the where-with-all today to start up some projects.   I have been frustrated with the darkness in the dining room, and I think I was able to revise it enough to bring some light to this wonderful room… (I never thought that I would have a home with a real dining room!)

See how dark it is?  The paint is so bright, and the sun is at its most visible through the front windows, yet it feels heavy and depressing in here.

First, I traded out the purple curtains for the bright white ones in the office.  We pretty much only use the office at night, so it won’t matter that the curtains up there are dark; in fact, it will be nice for watching movies.  By contrast, the windows in the dining room affect us all the time, as we are constantly walking through that room.

I also added in 4 extra lightbulbs by rewiring my granni’s old chandelier to plug into a regular wall socket; it replaced the single bulb and drum shade that was previously lighting the room.

I also bothered to set the table with light colors, while still drawing in the fall theme by including a dried bouquet of gathered branches and evergreen boughs.

I also brought in the sideboard that usually sits behind the couch, which balances the room arrangement.  Check out how much lighter, brighter, and happier everything is!

Make-shift built in shelves for my dining room, spot-lighting and all!

If you happened to pick up on the sneak-peak last night, then you know the basic premise for this post.  I was incredibly lucky yesterday to find a way to finally get the cabinetry in my dining room that I’ve been longing for.  I was pricing the lumber to do it myself, and it really was absurd to spend that much on my first building project in such a visible area…I would be bound not to mess it up, and I probably would.

So, when I found a three-piece entertainment center at Goodwill for a great deal, I knew I could re-purpose the side units into the shelving that I was looking for.

Two trips home with these big-boys in the trunk, and I was ready to paint.

Step 1—I washed the dust off with a de-greaser and a microfiber cloth.

Step 2–I removed the hardware, doors, and shelves.

Step 3–I then did a quick priming coat with Bher 2 in 1 on sides, tops, and bottoms of the things.

Step 4–Derek helped me tape off around the glass in the big doors.  Then, I painted a coat of paint around all the edges using a purdy 2″ brush, including all the edges around the trim work and creases in the framing.

Step 5–I covered the entire group of items in two more coats of paint with a small roller, so that everything has the same finish.

Derek then helped me move the cabinets into the house and reattach the doors and hardware, starting with the shelves and ending with the doors.  I also replaced the door pulls.

Now I just need some china to display and a solution to the giant gap between the cabinet and the ceiling.

I’m in love!
